Top 5 of 2017 Review: Killing Of The Sacred Deer

Killing Of The Sacred Deer can only be described as the most uncomfortable and fucking brutal thing to sit through in all of cinema *bit hyperbolic but you get the idea* yet, the film is all the better for it.

Fear and nervousness is somewhat alien to myself in relation to film. Horror never really does it for me and the whole shtick is rather dull as it takes a special kind of fucked to really get me. However, this film had caught me in my sweet spot, as the film takes one dark turn after another. As from the start you open with a minute long close up of over chest surgery, which really sucks to look at. However, it's a great statement for the opening of this feature.

The story follows Colin Farrell's surgeon character who starts the film by hanging around this boy. Everything seems a bit suspect and is even odder when you realise he has a family with Nicole Kidman. Something isn't right about the whole situation and from their everything just gets more fucked.

Obviously with a Yorgos Lanthimos film you come to expect that kind of dead pan, expressionless acting. However, this directing style I feel really peaks with rising star, Barry Keoghan, as he plays one of the most compelling and unsettling villains in all of cinema *This time no hyperbole*. From his pasta eating shenanigans to his recurring persistence, you will come to despise this fuck with everything you have. And though his role in the film comes as somewhat of a spoiler, I feel that I need to speak about how hatable this kid is. Because it truly is incredible as he can easily stand toe to toe with Nurse Ratchet *One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest*.

However, Lanthimos's unique directing style really lends itself to the film as the enigmatic nature of such allows for a more interpretative look at each character as none of them are really likeable enough to root for. Now if you've seen Dogtooth or Lobster you know how much of an oddity this film will be but, trust me it works for the best. And though I can't say much as its best to go in with a clear head, this is honestly such an amazing film as the final climax makes you want to both cry and laugh simultaneously.

This film will be bleached into your minds for a full week and even from there you wont be able to forget it.
